Learn how to sew from scratch (in a straight line), read a pattern, iron fabric like your life depends on it, and get hooked on the feeling of making things with your own hands.
The course takes place in a cozy space at RechteSteek in Haarlem, with 5 students maximum, and consists of 5 sessions of 2 hours:
✦ Session 1: you meet your machine, give it a badass name, learn threading, straight lines and how to read a simple pattern, using provided fabric scraps.
✦ Session 2: you learn more about fabrics, seams, hems, the dreaded zippers, and the importance of pressing. Then you start using your new skills to make a small pouch or tote bag (fabric included).
✦ Session 3: you learn how to measure yourself (or someone else) properly, read a more complex pattern and adjust it. Then you choose a garment from a few beginner-friendly patterns, and pick your fabrics from the shop (not included).
✦ Session 4: you start your chosen project, work out a cutting plan that wastes as little fabric as possible, and begin assembling.
✦ Session 5: you finish the garment, add the final touches, and rejoice at all the future sewing projects piling up in your head.
By the end of this course you’ll be able to use a sewing machine with confidence and to take a project from start to finish. Oh, and you’ll be so damn proud.

When: Friday afternoons from 15 to 17. We start on the 6 Nov, then 13, 20, 27 and 4 Dec.
Where: RechteSteek, Generaal Cronjéstraat 135, 2021 JG Haarlem.
Language: The course is mainly in English, but I can provide guidance in conversational Dutch too, vragen in het Nederlands zijn welkom.
Included: The sewing machines, tools, and the fabric for your pouch or tote.
Not included: The fabric and notions for your garment, which you can buy directly at RechteSteek with a small discount.
Experience needed: none! If you can hold a pair of scissors, you can join.
Minimum participants: The course runs with at least 3 students, if we don’t reach that, I’ll move the start date or refund you.
